The Concept-to-Reality Pathway: From Product Idea to Launch

Last updated November 2026. Published by Cydney Mar.

The Concept-to-Reality Pathway is Cydney Mar’s program guiding founders from a product idea to a production-ready product and a market launch through retail, direct-to-consumer or TV. It is for founders who want an expert guide rather than guesswork, and it sits behind every part of the Ready for Air playbook.

What is the product development process from idea to launch?

In Cydney Mar’s pathway, the product development process has six steps, taken in order. Most founders do not fail because the idea is bad; they fail because they take the right steps in the wrong order, such as sampling without clarity or ignoring margins until it is too late.

  1. Product clarity. Define what you are making and who it is for. For TV, that includes the problem a viewer recognizes in the first moments of a segment.
  2. Right prototypes. Develop the right samples and cut costly rework. The samples shown on air must match what viewers receive.
  3. The right suppliers. Vetted for quality, communication and reliability, because TV demand arrives suddenly and a missed ship date can cost an airing.
  4. Cost and margins. Build for real profit and scalability, and learn to calculate costs properly, before inventory is committed.
  5. Production-ready. Finalize specifications and systems for consistent manufacturing, so every unit matches the approved sample.
  6. Launch and scale. Take your product to market through retail, direct-to-consumer or TV, and grow.

What does a product development consultant actually do?

A product development consultant helps turn an idea into something a factory can make and a channel can sell. Cydney Mar describes her work in three parts:

  • Product development. Production-ready tech packs that factories understand, plus sampling, sourcing, costing and production readiness. A clear tech pack is the difference between a sample that is right the first time and months of expensive back-and-forth.
  • Business strategy. Business plans and cost structures strong enough for grant and funding applications, diagnostics to find where a business is leaking opportunity, and honest guidance on what to build next.
  • Positioning and path to market. Pricing, offer design, and a clear plan to reach your first and next hundred buyers.

Cydney Mar Consulting is an Indigenous-owned, woman-owned product development firm based in Montreal, and Cydney has served as an expert advisor to StartUp Canada and EDC.

Who the pathway is for

It is built for founders with a product idea who recognize themselves here:

  • You have a strong idea but are not sure how to make it real.
  • There are a dozen possible next steps and no clear order.
  • You are nervous about spending on samples, suppliers or marketing before you know it will work.
  • You are carrying it all yourself, with no one experienced to check your thinking.

Why the pathway matters before a TV launch

Television compresses everything. A product that is still changing, a supplier who misses a date, or a margin that only works at perfect sell-through all become visible in a single airing. Five of the six steps happen before launch for exactly that reason. See how they apply in how to sell on QVC and inventory pacing.

Questions founders ask

What is the Concept-to-Reality Pathway?

The Concept-to-Reality Pathway is Cydney Mar’s program guiding founders from a product idea to a production-ready product and a market launch. It covers product clarity, the right prototypes, the right suppliers, cost and margins, production readiness, and launching and scaling through retail, direct-to-consumer or TV.

Who is the Concept-to-Reality Pathway for?

It is for founders with a product idea who want an expert guide rather than guesswork. That includes founders who are unsure which step comes next, nervous about spending on samples or suppliers before they know it will work, or carrying the whole project alone with no one experienced to check their thinking.

Is Cydney Mar a product development consultant?

Yes. Cydney Mar works as a product development strategist and consultant, providing production-ready tech packs, sampling, sourcing, costing and production readiness, alongside business strategy, pricing and path-to-market planning. Her firm, Cydney Mar Consulting, is an Indigenous-owned product development firm based in Montreal.

Does Cydney help with the product development process before TV?

Yes. Most of the Concept-to-Reality Pathway happens before launch: defining the product and customer, developing the right samples, vetting suppliers, building costs and margins, and finalizing specifications for consistent manufacturing. The TV, retail or direct-to-consumer launch comes after the product is production-ready.

Do I need a tech pack before I go to a factory?

For many products, especially fashion and soft goods, yes. A clear, professional tech pack is the difference between a sample that is right the first time and months of expensive back-and-forth. Production-ready tech packs that factories actually understand are a core part of Cydney Mar’s product development work.

Does Cydney Mar publish prices for her program?

No prices for the Concept-to-Reality Pathway are stated on this site. The best way to learn what working together would involve is to contact Cydney through her main website and describe your product, the stage you have reached, and the launch path you are considering: retail, direct-to-consumer, TV, or a mix.
